Rod Wells, CFPTM

In the summer of 1985, my x-spouse and I began traditional divorce proceedings.  We each got attorneys and they fought for our best interests. . . at the expense of everything we owned.  Part way through the process I ran out of cash and began representing myself. I spent hours in the law library  getting ready for trial.  I learned first hand the difference between the philosophy and doctrine of the Domestic Relations Law and how it's practiced.  In the movie War of the Roses  Danny DeVito, 'Esq.' has a line. . . "When someone who charges $300/hr wants to tell you something for free, you should listen." Well, pretend I charge $300/hr and I am telling you this for free . .  . "Stay out of court because your money is the least of what you'll part with."
Today, I'm committed to helping couples relate to each other happily whether they stay married or not.  If they choose divorce, I assist them in completing the process with compassion and dignity.
Divorce Mediation requires knowledge and skills in several areas of discipline. These disciplines include mediation, law, taxation, finance, and psychology.

As a Mediator, I'm an advanced practitioner of the Association for Conflict Resolution. I've completed extensive mediation training and specialized training in; divorce taxation, child support, and parenting issues for divorced and separated parents including annual continuing education. I have successfully facilitated dispute resolution with couples for over 20 years. I am a member of Association for Conflict Resolution and the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York. I'm on the board of the The New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and the New York State chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioner, I draw on 34 years of experience.   With my background, I can explain what your financial options are and the effects your choices will have on budgets, taxes, net worth, and future plans.  When you're negotiating your agreement, it helps the process to have these answers on the spot. I'm a member of the NY chapter of the Association of Divorce Financial Planners.

In the realm of psychology, I bring over a thousand hours of training in relationship counseling and have helped hundreds of couples create satisfying relationships. In the midst of deep emotions, my      experience helps me keep couples  focused on the choices to be made in creating agreements they are willing to keep. At the same time I am committed to honoring the feelings they experience.

When it comes to the Domestic Relations Law I learned it the old fashioned way. I lived through it, although that has included structured study including over 20 hours each year of continuing education.

My commitment is to remain on the cutting edge of mediation practice as it becomes the preferred way to restructure families and transition from marriage to separation.
